Inclusivity in STEM Education.
In Learning Methods and Design, I developed a project entitled “Inclusivity in STEM Education.” I was tasked with designing over the course of the semester, a learning engagement for a client. Alongside my client, MC Chan, Assistant Teaching Professor in the Biology Department, we redesigned a workshop for the Assistantship in Teaching (AT) Program. This program is designed to support graduate students and developing teachers to build their teaching skills.
In developing this workshop, we sought to answer the following questions:
- How might we connect inclusive pedagogy to the best practices on leading quality recitation and lab sections?
- How can we create opportunities for learners, at various comfort levels with the content, to participate in the workshop?
- How can we empower learners to leverage their pre-existing knowledge so that no matter what level of pre-work was completed, all learners can participate equally?
- How can we present material in multiple formats to appeal to a broad range of learners and learning styles?
- How can we model inclusive facilitation practices live, during the workshop?
I presented on this topic at the Teaching, Learning, and Innovation Summer Institute on Thursday, May 26,2022. The theme of this conference was “Creating Space” and my presentation was entitled: “Inclusivity in STEM coursework: Making space for all Learners.”

We also reprised this workshop for the AT program on September 19, 2022. See link to our version 2.0 slide deck here.
